The game seems like it's going on the right road of success and seems like it can beat Infinite Warfare. It's fun, challenging and overall a great experience. The downside is the bugs and the cheats you can do with them. Hello Wandering Traveler and welcome to this Beta Review!
The Gameplay
The gameplay has some issues when it comes to constant fun, but it still holds up. The game has 4 classes: Assault, Medic, Support and Scout. They have many specific ways to play all of them and can put the game at a great balance if you know how to use them. You can snipe enemy team one-by-one or suppress the snipers with your heavy machine gun.
If you don't value kills, but like to help, you can get the medic class to aid wounded teammates or take to support class to supply ammo to them as well. You can take the special classes in a variety of tanks or be mounted on a horse as Calvary to turn the tide against the enemy team. You can sneak in a little heavy weapons with the Flamer class and the Heavy class that's scattered throughout the maps.
The two modes, Rush and Cap the Point, are actually really fun and challenging. They both really challenge the player to do things you wouldn't want to risk normally. It's a fun experience for almost any FPS player. If you haven't tried the Beta yet, I would recommend playing this before September 9th. But I'm not done with this.
The Bugs
The game is fun, but the bugs can be a problem. Although, flaws are what a human has, but they kind of destroy the game. Well, more like exploit the game. Horses jump to different areas from time-to-time, vehicles can flip because you ran over a small rock, you can climb vehicles to make a god tank, bullets can fly over heads and still get a hit and the jumping mechanic can disappoint you. Those are the few I have found, so many of you might have experienced something even worse.
One that I don't want to call a bug, but more of a glitch is when the round's over, the screen stays at the map, not showing you the stats. I would like to know if I helped out the team or not! Or at least my squad. I want to know if it was worth the time I spent.
And just one thing I'd like to talk about, which is the overmounting. Yes, I'm calling it that. Imagine a vehicle or tank that hold 6 people and each person in the tank has a weapon, now imagine six more on top of them. Not an extra weapon in the same passenger spot, but people with the support class that climbs on top of the vehicle and prones on it. This is an overkill since the hitbox on a prone player is very small. People who finds the special classes, like the Heavy or Flamer, are always on top of tanks. When I found one of these overmounters, I wanted to see what the process was to do this. What happens is that only about 4 people can climb and stay on top of a tank, so to put six on it, they prone and circle the roof of the tank to keep their placement on it. I almost laughed at this, but I noticed other players doing it on cars and horses.
I saw a gif that had a guy with the Flamer class and a guy with the medic class climb on a horse and attacked. I can tell that people have done this wars in real life, but seriously! It's a game! You are to have fun, not exploit the game to get your own fun.
Mechanics and Their Problems
There is a lot of problems with the mechanics and how they work. One example is the driving. Very cool at first and basic, but starts to fall to the ground when you move 3 feet. Almost literally. Imagine your driving about 45 miles and did a not-so-sharp turn and suddenly your car starts to lift on the other side. I've seen a WWI car and I know that they're not that light.
Flying a plane is like trying to control a rocket! The right stick pulls up and drops down and turns the wings left and right. To do a correct turn, use the left stick to get away from that bolder your about to run into. It's not a sharp turn, but I don't care much about it. Adds some challenge while riding it. Anyways, the plane controls are kind of what we thought of Battlefront's pilot controls: they were very different and hard to get use to.
The tanks aren't really much of a difficulty, just is very slow. But when traveling on a rocky road, there is a risk to flip over. The vehicle can flip back on it's feet, but can take a while or just bug out.
Besides the vehicles, there is some personal mechanics that can be bugged. When you are going to cross a fence or wall, there is a chance that it will phase you back where you were before. I have one recorded on my Xbox when I was trying to cap a point. That was not fun. A bullet can fly by and still hit you. I mean seriously. I don't want this Hanso related conversation again.
The Calvary class is a bit too OP. I mean, he has medkits and ammo bags. You don't think he'll use those to spam grenades on tanks? And his rifle takes two shots and you're done! Why even have the horse when your just going to heal yourself and kill everyone with your rifle? I would like it if they toned done the damage and support package uses, but the original settings is back when your mounted on the horse, because the horse doesn't seem needed sometimes.
The Life of Sniper
The Scout class is very OP when it comes to damage, but is pretty balanced. You can hide in an area far away, but the glare from your scope can be seen. I like that, I don't wanna guess where he is when I try to suppress him. You can fire while scoped, but after one shot, you have to press the trigger again or release the left trigger to *** the weapon for a bullet to be in the barrel. A clever way to distract the sniper and is a great way to keep the player on full attention in the game. You can be very far away to sniper players, but your bullets have weight, so you to measure and predict where the bullet will land at a far distance.
The Land and It's Effects
The maps in the game seem like they're going to be awesome, because they seem to go to the right root where the maps and it's climate can change the game completely. A sand storm rolls by and I bump into walls as I try to go cap a point. You can hardly see anything, so your guess if that's a friendly or a foe is as good as mine.
When it rained (Which happened once in the few times I played it), the sound of gunfire was distorted with thunder and rain hitting the ground, while the clouds lose any hope on relying on checking shadows for enemies.
But the best thing about the map's climate is how it can change the atmosphere. A fog rolled in and looking for enemies felt like a real war. You check the mountain tops for snipers that might flank you and everything seems a lot more quiet than it's suppose to. That's when your emotion changes with your surroundings. And I love it! I hope other games try to do this as well.
Besides the climate, there is the land's design and how you can destroy it. It's beautiful as you can pick easy spots to camp or just sniper enemies, but be careful, since they can be destroyed: buildings, ground, pillars, anything! You can tear it down. You can make a crater in the ground and make it a trench or cover. I know that the other Battlefield games have done this, but I love it. Turn the land into how you want it.
True to the Time
I showed my grandfather this and he said he would enjoy seeing this and showed me some of his WWI weapons he bought. He had the automatic machine gun of the time and had the carbine rifle that the sniper used. Even the mallets and maces they used. He told me they are all authentic and were used in the war. We even shot them and they sounded like the ones in the beta. I looked at the weapons and thought they really worked hard to stay true to the time period. I'm glad they did this unexpected time period in a game since it fits with the Call of Duty title Battlefield hopes to beat. I really hope the game has a great story mode and gets the player stuck in this time period and feel the pain that any soldier would.
Conclusion
Overall, the game looks great and the gameplay is really fun. It's small and the Beta has only two modes to explore and one map to play on. I can't wait to buy this game, but still a bit worried it might flop. In case this has you want to pre-order the game or even the Collector's Edition, know that the Collector's Edition doesn't have the game. That's EA for ya! I know EA may not listen to me or any to fix or patch their problem in this game, but at least I said something about them so they can get pointed out. I hope you somewhat enjoyed this review and 'til next time...
