Oh, Titan Fall 2, I love you. Your first installment had so much potential. The story felt fluid, the gameplay felt so smooth, but because you made the campaign a mixture of different multiplayer modes, the game got a low rating. Then they came with a sequel, with a guaranteed real story campaign. Now all of us critics can judge this with the most anger or happiness we have. Hello and welcome to this infamously kind thought blog!
Okay, to get it over quick, I want to talk about the multiplayer. It's fun, easy and is unlike most FPS's. The only thing I have problem with is the gameplay. "How can you like it, StarterPack, You hate the base of the game?" I mean how it's played fellow viewer. If you play it, you are given a variety of modes to play. You can play the few modes in the game, such as Amped Hardpoint, Capture the Flag, Bounty Hunt, Colosseum, where you do something other than kill people. They are fun, but the objective is overshadowed by the game's core gameplay. I forget it's capture the flag and our flag gets stolen. And the icon to show the flags are so hidden. I guess it's not to be too distracting, but I can hardly see it and forget about it! If you face away from the icon it's not on the screen anymore. I know it is a noticeable on the map, but I hardly look at it! I have to pay attention to enemies, titans and which wall I should jump on to next.
Bounty Hunt can fit with the core gameplay, since you can just kill for fun, the objective of the game is try get as much money as you can by killing grunts and spectres, but after the wave's over, you result to killing pilots that, most likely, don't have a bonus or have a small one to take. Killing a pilot doesn't grant you anything unless they killed a grunt or spectre. You would think that killing a pilot would grant you some kind of extra money along with the kill, but you get nothing. I mean, it's a major kill for anyone if there is a distinct difference between the grunts and pilots, but I guess I don't get an extra bonus with that kind of kill.
The other modes where you just kill your opponents are fun and easy to learn, but is kind of tedious. It's hard to tell which is which when you play one and sometimes aren't long lasting. It's like what I said about Overwatch, the same mode with the illusion of more modes. "C'mon, StarterPack, you gotta love the multiplayer! You like CoD's for god's sake!" That's true and how do you know that? Anyways, the two games are very different, even though they both can do wallrunning, but that's besides the point. CoD's multiplayer has the objective in your face and make you do it until you finish it. In Titanfall, you have so much space and the objective isn't forced upon you that you get lost. I know that they are to give Titans space to roam, but I rather have some small spaces to force the player to leave his Titan. The first Titanfall had some great choke points and has lots of spots for players to meet as this one just has building that have too many exits and entrances and too few choke points, unless as a Titan.
Besides that, the one mode I want to talk about is Free-For-All. They have about 8 players in the roster and has them fight in a large arena where you can hardly find anyone. The map is so large that even a titan is hard to find. You can hear them, but you can never see them and when you do, they have already killed you before you can react. The highest kills I have ever had in the mode is 8 kills and I was in third place! I could get 20 kills in any other mode and I would be near the bottom of the leader board.
Now the game modes are gone, let's talk about the game's gameplay in the multiplayer. Obviously the gameplay is based on parkour and wallrunning, but they kind of rag it down with the Grappling Hook. The jumps aren't tight to most maps and require you to have the hook on you. I like to pull off tricks in the game, but sometimes when a wall is too far from me and seeing that I clearly need a hook to make that jump possible is kind of aggravating. There are other classes in the game that have so much to add to the player's skill, but the maps provided don't give them anything to work with. The only acception with this problem is the Stimpack class since it speeds the player up giving them enough momentum to do those impossible jumps.
And those who use it professionally are just amazing! Not like they use it well on walls, they use aggressively on players, hooking them and executing them constantly. It's annoying, but it's amazing to see on the viewer's perspective watching his fellow teammate die horribly and amazingly. I'm glad they put a limited use on it since on the Beta, it had three uses and the charge was too quick.
Now that the multiplayer is out of our way, we can finally talk about the campaign. "Are you going to act like Egoraptor and say it's bad and destroy my dreams and childhood with your opinions?" No, I like him, but I wouldn't say I'm going to say it's bad. It has a perfect blend of action and cinematic feel to it. The gameplay is smooth, the engine responds greatly, but each game isn't perfect. "You lied to me!" No! This is something that all storytellers will agree with or even moviegoers alike. I'm talking to you Gaia!
Now, the story is straightforward and has some great lore behind it. The characters are great, but seem generic. Yes, you dweebs generic. The very word that this game is not. Well, it is argued, but most don't agree. For example, we have the clearly good guys and the obvious bad guys. What does that sound like?
GI Joe Maybe?
Maybe not that generic, but you get the point. We have the Not-Meant-to-be-Funny Robot!
Probably heard about that before?
Okay a little too far. You get the point. There are a lot of things wrong with the characters that just seem kind of generic and easy to see or loud to the point that it's too obvious. Take Kane for instance. He's the first boss and you can tell the IMC even fear him. He's clearly an insane guy that even the person who is in under command is scared of. Nothing like a plot to complain about, but it's mostly an opinion based conception.
The only thing I don't like about the story is why the IMC and the Militia is at war. I think they stated it in the beginning, but I don't know. Are they trying to take the Militia's planet or land? Is the Militia a revolutionary army that is trying to revolt against a the government that is the IMC? And why push the Militia so hard? They are only farmers! Why send human hating robots at them? Why risk the millions of grunts to fight against them?
Seeing that pilots aren't a Militia thing, if you play the time traveling level if you approach the professor, making you ask why these two factions are fighting each other. Seems like the Militia took a fight they were too small to take.
What I didn't like was how they did the time traveling thing. I know that it's a great level, but it seems like they are trying to show off their engine too much. "But StarterPack! They did the same in Dishonored 2, the game you love so much!" I know, they were both great, but it seemed like they were boasting too much about the game's engine, even for Dishonored's sake. And I looks like they both had the same idea without knowing and once they showed it off in E3, the developer for Titanfall 2 face palmed they didn't.
Anyways, my dad loves the game and my sister who doesn't like shooters much loves it to death. I have fun with it and I can't get enough of it. These are just pet peeves I have about this game. I hope you like this little blog and 'til next time...
