Back in the late 90's there was a small trickle of superhero movies. There were some great ones and there were the unspeakable bad ones, but we nerds got what we wanted for once. It was a glorious time and it was a spark of a new generation. Now that we got all we can ever want, it's no longer trickling, it's pouring. Hello and welcome to this little thought blog.
Now, before we start, I wanna say that there isn't much wrong with some of the movies out, but at this day and age, producers are going as low as they can go with money. You rarely see anyone try to do a movie of their own ideas anymore and there is a big reason why, they are risky. This is something you never heard of, can you really be interested? You would have to be sucked in by the trailers which take lots of money to produce and create, and you would have to have a great story, but even those are hard to create and take lots of money to do. So, now the tree is too high for us, we are now forced to get the low hanging fruit, and that fruit is reboots and already made franchises.
Producers think this is profitable, and if you ask me, it is. To have a producer say yes to a movie, the movie has to have a specific audience, is it a romance, an action, what? And with the already heavily followed comics by Marvel and DC, the audience was already there and didn't need a look-up to see. There are nerds all around the country that love these kind of stories and seeing their favorite Superhero come to the big screen is awesome. I sure as hell loved it when Iron Man was announced. So producers like this easy audience, they have no risk, no money spent, nothing to lose on the table. They can bet a million dollars and still get more than half that back if it's a new Batman movie.
It really does suck that these are the kind of movies that we get instead of original ideas and risks to see if this new movie is going to be great. "But, StarterPack, what about originals like Edge of Tomorrow or Oblivion?" Oblivion, from what I got, is based off of a novel and Edge of Tomorrow is based on a Japanese Manga called All You Need is to Kill. You see not many movies these days are based on original ideas, just books with a large following and a specific audience already made. Can I ask you if you have ever seen a movie that isn't or at least said wasn't based on a novel or book? It's hard!
I love seeing some of those great pieces of work get attention, but it's hard to say it was originally made if all they had to do was stylize the characters instead of work on the story. Superhero movies these days are getting some bad raps, and I can admit it does. I mean, when have you ever seen one made that made you say, "I WANNA SEE THAT AGAIN!!" The only I can say that with is Logan.
I'm not saying that all those kinds of movies are bad, but I wanna see some creative people create some awesome story and make it a movie with something for all of us to get interested with, and has a specific audience to lure. I am actually getting bored with all the movies based on books, The Giver was bad enough, now just please drive this generation with something to remember. "But StarterPack, wouldn't that be expensive?" Of course it would, and sometimes it won't. Great movies like Alien and Terminator were on low budgets and (if you haven't noticed) they had a low casting. The characters were always at a minimum and the people creating the monsters and the sets were usually people that were very desperate and asked for any kind of payment. They might have spent over 10 grand, but that's cheap money for a movie. You know the saying, "You can do amazing things if you put your mind to it?' That is usually the case for most great movies, it was people with wild ideas and a low budget.
"StarterPack, what about the superhero genre? We are almost finished with the entire Marvel franchise, so what about that?" I hear they are going to reboot everything they just did and retell the story they made, I'm not too happy about that (More furious that much), but I'm interested in some of the movies. Robert's take on Iron Man isn't the character in the comics, so I would love to see someone else's. The first Thor movie was not too good, so seeing that we're out of the age of CGI Mass Use, I would love to see someone take on the hero in a different light. Everything else, I don't wanna see and I still think this is a tricky move. There is such a thing as franchise fatigue, so the producers are going to have to result to something else with an audience or just jump to a new comic book company to mooch off of.
I actually can't wait, that day would spark an event that would probably end the fame of Superhero movies, thus starting a new wave of movie genres, but it all takes what's good at the time or what's desired. I just hope, producers try and be smart and create an audience instead of trying to grab one already made. Well, I hope you enjoyed this and 'til next time...
